Teen Mothers: where they are now

IMG_1711.jpeg
I was surprised to be pregnant at 18, my first year I’m college and living on campus. I was pregnant by Christmas my first year of college. I stayed and tried to go to class and do the college thing for a while but realized that I needed my family and more importantly, needed to return home.
My parents were upset about my decisions and at 19 my son Tim was born. In the beginning, I had no idea what my future would be but I’m thankful that I had positive, supportive people in my life that helped me along the way.
I held jobs in the beginning that didn’t pay much and I remember landing a job paying $28,000 a year and I
thought I was set! Of course, that wasn’t enough for my
car, apartment and baby needs but it didn’t stop me from pushing forward and finding a better opportunity. Over the years, I learned more about myself and what I could thrive doing and I landed my first job in sales. It fit my personality and gave me the flexibility to take care of my son. I’ve had several jobs in sales, selling radio, print, television, and later digital advertising, and was able to support my little family. I struggled some but I became confident in who I am as a person and didn’t let my past struggles stop me from being successful. My son and I grew together and to this day, we’re best friends. He’s proud of the mom I became and tells me regularly. Now he’s 32 and we’re both fine and despite the beginning, both of our futures are bright! I would advise any young mother to stay focused on what you can do and not what you can’t. Your life isn’t over just because you’ve had a baby, it’s just time to grow up, get focused, and learn who you can be to take care of what’s important. YOU & YOUR little one.
